Goddess Gayatri is known to be the divine universal mother and also the mother of the Vedas (Vedamata). She is considered to be the divine energy that emanates from all things. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma needed to perform a yajna which required the presence of his wife, Goddess Saraswati, who was not available. Lord Brahma asked the priest to find a woman who could take the place of Goddess Saraswati so that the yajna could proceed. The priest found a suitable woman, named her Gayatri and married her to Lord Brahma. This is also why Goddess Gayatri is often referred to as the manifestation of Goddess Saraswati.
Goddess Gayatri is depicted with five faces sitting on a lotus flower. Her five faces symbolise five pranas and the five elements of the universe—earth, sky, fire, water and air. She has ten hands and carries the weapons of the Trinity- Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in her hands.
The most well-known prayer in worship of Goddess Gayatri is the Gayatri mantra. But there is yet another prayer which is a powerful way of worshipping the goddess- the Gayatri chalisa. This is a forty-verse prayer in praise of the goddess. Ved Vyas is said to have called this chalisa as the essence of all Vedas.
The Gayatri chalisa asks the Goddess Gayatri to relieve the devotee from all pain and to bestow bliss. It talks of the goddess as the source of all light and intelligence. It is believed that a person who chants the Gayatri Chalisa daily with devotion shall be freed from all ills and gain clarity of thought.
Some of the popular verses of the Gayatri chalisa are
